UNC system happenings for April 16, 2018

The new president of the UNC-system student body president, elected Wednesday, is Bettylenah Njaramba, a junior at N.C. Central University.  Drugs were found in an ECU fraternity house Tuesday after a long investigation. UNC-system President Margaret Spellings spoke about education reform and investment at the Reagan Institute’s Summit on Education in Washington. "I think people are exhausted with education reform or feel like it's not possible to close the achievement gap," Spellings said. "So I think the boulder is drifting back down the hill because of a lack of urgency around the imperative of closing the achievement gap."

Pi Beta Phi and Phi Delta Theta hosts 10th annual Eve Carson memorial 5K

Pi Beta Phi and Phi Delta Theta co-hosted the 10th annual Eve Carson Memorial 5K For Education and brought in around 1,400 runners on Saturday. Held in memory of former Student Body President Eve Carson, who was killed in 2008, the 5K has followed in her footsteps of honoring scholarship and education for 9 years.

Beta Upsilon Chi to join Interfraternity Council as associate member

What began as a slight curiosity in 2015 by then UNC sophomore Harrison Toohey, would later become the foundation for a new Greek chapter at UNC.   Toohey's conversations with the fraternity members at his summer job, Pine Cove Christian Camp, transformed into a new chapter of Beta Upsilon Chi, abbreviated as BYX, at UNC focused on providing members an alternative fraternity experience.

Anticipation and Elation: Bid Day 2017

For the third year is a row, audio director Cole del Charco rushed sororities to get a taste of Greek life and the emotions surrounding Bid Day — when potential new members find out what sorority they've been accepted to and run with their new sisters to the sorority house.

The speed bumps for Uber plans have gotten bigger

Plans to provide free Uber rides for UNC students have officially stalled. Student Body President Bradley Opere said the talks between Uber and UNC are at a standstill because a decision can’t be reached over accessibility and liability issues.
