Liza Wieland, an English professor at East Carolina University, was recently awarded the prestigious Robert Penn Warren Award for Fiction by the Fellowship of Southern Writers — a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating and recognizing emerging literature from the American South.

Concert fundraises for UNC Center for Civil Rights

UNC’s Center for Civil Rights took center stage at a benefit concert — part of ongoing efforts to resist a proposal by the UNC-system Board of Governors — at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, North Carolina on Sunday.

Trump cuts education budget, reduces accountability measures for states

The Donald Trump administration took steps to shift policy in the Department of Education this month — proposing a $9 billion cut in federal spending and increasing state autonomy over education standards.President Donald Trump’s budget proposal shifts money into school choice programs and decreases funding for need-based college scholarships.
