North Carolina guard Joel Berry (2) drives in on a Butler defender during their Sweet 16 matchup on Friday.

Joel Berry tasked with stopping De'Aaron Fox ahead of Elite Eight matchup with Kentucky

MEMPHIS — The checklist is lengthy, of everything the North Carolina men’s basketball team brings on its road trips: Kennedy Meeks’ favorite pair of UGG boots, for instance, or Nate Britt’s extra earrings. They’re frills, sure, but anything to make a hotel room feel more like home. It makes sense, then, that Joel Berry and Theo Pinson would bring their own piece of home whenever the team travels.

UNC guard Kenny Williams (24) defends Kentucky freshman guard Malik Monk (5) as he drives to the basket at the CBS Sports Classic on Saturday.

Malik Monk still unsolvable for UNC men's basketball defense

MEMPHIS — Nothing strikes fear in the North Carolina men’s basketball team quite like Malik Monk. No, he doesn’t haunt the Tar Heels’ dreams quite like Kris Jenkins does — nobody could — but the Kentucky guard’s 47-point epic from December still stings. And with the No. 1 seed Tar Heels (30-7) and No. 2 seed Wildcats (32-5) facing off in Sunday’s Elite Eight, there’s still no answer for Monk.

Former UNC guard Marcus Paige (4) returned to the state with the Salt Lake City Stars to take on the Greensboro Swarm. Greensboro defeated Salt Lake City 104-99. Here, Paige talks with former N.C. State guard Cat Barber (7).

Warm welcome greets Marcus Paige in his return to North Carolina

Marcus Paige couldn’t help but smile. He stepped on the court Thursday night for the 42nd time in the 2016-17 season in a navy Salt Lake City Stars uniform. He wore No. 4, clean white Nike shoes and black leggings. He looked like the Marcus Paige that North Carolina fans know and love, just in a different shade of blue.

North Carolina forward Isaiah Hicks (4) goes up for a lay in against Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Greenville on Sunday.

FILM REVIEW: The play call that saved the season for UNC men's basketball

When Arkansas’ Jaylen Barford scored a layup to put the Razorbacks up 65-60 with 3:28 remaining in the second half of Sunday’s game, it wasn't hyperbole to say the North Carolina men's basketball team was staring at the end of its season. In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, UNC — a No. 1 seed and the ACC regular-season champion — was on the brink of elimination.
