Word on the Street: Are you voting in the midterms?

With the 2018 midterm elections fast approaching, many UNC students are eager to exercise their right to vote. Others aren't. Staff writer Lyell McMerty asked UNC students around campus, "Are you planning on voting in the midterm elections? If so, what issues concern you the most? If not, why not?"

Need another reason to vote in November? It's good for your health

While Millennials are one of the largest generation groups, there are still more Baby Boomers and older generations that show up to the voting polls each November. The U.S. Legislature is seeing more diversity than ever before, but it is not equal to the diversity of the population that the legislature represents. Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia suggest that political participation can have a range of positive affects for the mind, toward relationships with others and society.

According to UNC student responses to the AAU survey, over 68 percent of students who reported being sexually assaulted in any manner said they never reported the assault because they thought it would be too difficult or embarrassing, or that it wasn’t serious enough.

UNC found in violation of Title IX

After a five-year federal investigation into UNC’s policies and practices dealing with sexual assault and sexual harassment cases, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights found the University in violation of Title IX.
