Election roundup: Who won Tuesday night?

Voters went to the polls in cities and states across the country Tuesday — choosing mayors, governors and an assortment of other ballot measures. Here's a roundup of some of the more contentious races and surprising outcomes.

Few faces change on Carrboro Board of Aldermen

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen added one new face Tuesday night.  Incumbents Jacquelyn Gist, Randee Haven-O’Donnell and Sammy Slade were all re-elected, alongside newcomer Barbara Foushee. This is the first time Foushee, whose sister Valerie is an N.C. senator, has run for office. She won around 25.33 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results from Orange County precincts.

NC Commission of Inquiry on Torture to hold public hearings

The North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture will hold a public hearing Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 to explore North Carolina’s role in supporting the Central Intelligence Agency’s Detention and Interrogation Program, according to a press release by the commission.

Who gets on the UNC-system Board of Governors?

 The UNC-system Board of Governors faced scrutiny after a system-wide ban on litigation — forcing the UNC Center for Civil rights to cease taking real legal cases. While the Board itself is known across campuses, the process through which people get on the board might be less known.
