Q&A with Study Abroad Adviser Anna Wilson

With the recent opening of study abroad applications, Tar Heels are preparing to pack their suitcases and expand their world views. But what exactly should they know before saying “ciao” to Chapel Hill? Anna Wilson, a UNC alum who works as a study abroad adviser, offered her expertise on study abroad to The Daily Tar Heel.

UNC striving to increase study abroad opportunities

When Bob Miles was first appointed the full-time study abroad director in 2000, he saw less than 800 students go through his program.  Now, UNC is ranked 17th in total students studying abroad among all American higher education institutions, according to the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) 2017 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. According to the report, UNC sent 2,124 abroad in the 2015-2016 school year.

International students increasing in US, at UNC

The number of international students in the U.S. is at an all-time high — and with 886,052 international students at U.S. schools during the 2013-14 academic year, the U.S. now hosts more foreign students than any other country.

Carrboro High School revamps international studies program

When UNC freshman Eliza Filene was at Carrboro High School, her involvement in the Academy of International Studies took her from Carrboro to Decatur, Ill., to Haiti — and due to the redevelopment of the program this year, more Carrboro students will be following in Filene’s footsteps.
