1:20 a.m., THURSDAY, NOV. 27, Lahaina -- The only two times the North Carolina men's basketball team has ever won the Maui Invitational, the team made it to the Final Four the same year.
Now, Tyler Hansbrough and the Tar Heels will try to make that three times, following a convincing 102-87 win against Notre Dame in Wednesday's championship game.
Despite coach Roy Williams proclaiming Hansbrough only about 75 percent, he led the Tar Heels with 34, doubling his total from each of his previous two games, and going 13-for-19 from the floor Wednesday.
Point guard Ty Lawson hit 22 points Wednesday and was selected tournament MVP -- on the week, Lawson matched 22 assists with only two turnovers.
The last time the Tar Heels won the tournament, in 2004, the team also won the national championship, the first for coach Williams.
