60 'lie in' to commemorate dead

The first anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings did not pass unnoticed for at least one group of volunteers. About 60 people - and one dog - lay down in the center of Polk Place on Wednesday, many wearing Va. Tech T-shirts or ribbons. Each of their bodies represented one person killed by a gun in the U.S. Volunteers abandoned bicycles and a wheelchair in the grass as another volunteer read the names of the 33 people killed at Va. Tech, including gunman Seung-Hui Cho.

A few more vie for RHA spot

Community governor candidates are up for election today, but almost half the communities are not expected to see a race. Of the 15 on-campus residence hall communities, just eight have more than one candidate vying for the office. Candidates in three communities - Cobb, Manning East and Morrison - are running uncontested, while three other communities - Craige, Ehringhaus and Manning West - received no applicants.

Campus groups unite for anti-sweatshop pit protest

Three hours after Students for a Democratic Society staged an anti-war protest, another group of students gathered in the Pit to protest injustice. Julio Castillo and Manuel Pujols, workers in a Hanesbrands Inc. factory in the Dominican Republic, spoke to about 20 students about their experiences there - experiences they say have included illegal 12-hour workdays with insufficient pay and poor labor conditions. "The company refuses to comply with what they promised workers over two years ago," Pujols said via a translator.

Emergency sirens to be tested

UNC’s new emergency siren system is in place and will undergo additional testing this semester, University officials said. The four sirens are designed to alert those in the area of an emergency situation. Shaped like a stack of large, off-white discs, they are mounted on 50-foot-tall poles at three locations on the main campus and one other University-owned site. The sirens will sound in case of a tornado, an “armed and dangerous person” or a major chemical spill or other hazard in the area, according to the Alert Carolina Web site.

Raynor begins laying groundwork for SBP

After her victory in the student elections Tuesday night, Student Body President-elect J.J. Raynor is starting to develop her game plan for the next month and a half until she takes office April 1. One of Raynor's first major tasks will be assembling a Cabinet and the rest of her administration, which likely will be large, she said. Her campaign staff numbered about 300 people. "I would like to have a large administration because I think the more people you have involved, the more you can get done and the more people you can link into campus," Raynor said.

Lenoir gets new option today

The Lenoir Mainstreet space formerly occupied by Pita Pit is scheduled to reopen today with a new tenant - Mediterranean Deli. Both restaurants have Franklin Street locations, but the deli is farther away from campus than its predecessor, a factor which officials said might be crucial in its success. "I think it will add a very nice flavor to Lenoir," said Jamil Kadoura, the owner of Mediterranean Deli. "Mediterranean food is becoming trendy and very popular."

Bar night to promote responsible drinking

The Honor Court might be the last group students would expect to find hosting a bar night, but to Chairman Dan Cowan, the apparent contradiction makes perfect sense. The seniors-only event, which will start at 10 p.m. today at East End Oyster & Martini Bar, is designed to promote responsible drinking. "I think a lot of time, people don't realize that there can also be conduct sides of the Honor Code. We were trying to think of creative ways to get the message out," Cowan said.

Drive aims to educate voters

Three master's students from UNC's School of Public Health set out earlier this week to increase local senior citizens' awareness about health care issues. The team sought to help attendees at a local senior center prepare to vote in the upcoming presidential elections by educating them about candidates' health care stances. Miriam Mutuku, Erica Nelson and Michelle Sonia gave a half-hour presentation called "Vote for Your Health" on Tuesday at Whitaker Mill Senior Center in Raleigh.
