Chapel Hill library construction delayed due to budget

Looking around at the clutter of makeshift shelves, books and 14-year-old piles of dust at the Chapel Hill Public Library, Ron Mills said it is hard to imagine the building will be empty in five days. The town is in the process of moving its only library from its location at 100 Library Drive to a temporary spot in University Mall.

Wilson Library to undergo mass sprinkler installation

One of the University’s oldest libraries and home to scores of irreplaceable documents is especially vulnerable to fire damage. Wilson Library ­— which holds a variety of rare historical collections — was completed in 1929, before fire codes required sprinklers in University buildings.

Civil War: University president’s daughter announces engagement to Union general

MAY 1865 — The family of University President and former Governor David Lowry Swain has sent out many invitations requesting the attendance of family and long-time friends at the marriage of their daughter, Miss Ella Swain, to Union General Smith Atkins of Illinois. The date is set for August 23 of this year, but it does not appear many guests will be in attendance. How the couple met is still up for debate. Some claim the two met at the home of President Swain.

Employer retention and business regulation improvements are the top priorities in a plan by a local organization to improve the area’s business climate.For the first time, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce has released an official list of public policy goals for the next two years.

Chef of Lantern up for prestigious award

Andrea Reusing, owner of Lantern Restaurant on Franklin Street, has been nominated as one of the top six chefs in the Southeast by The James Beard Foundation. The James Beard Awards spotlight the best and brightest talent in the food industry and have been called “The Oscars of the food world,” by Time Magazine.
