Tuition at UNC low compared to peers

On the same day the University of California system voted to increase undergraduate tuition by an unprecedented 32 percent, UNC administrators voted for a tuition proposal that demonstrated their resistance to high tuition.

The tuition and fees advisory task force voted today on two proposals to recommend to the chancellor that would increase tuition for all students at equal percentages, regardless of residency status.

The proposal favored by the committee would seek to raise resident tuition more than the state-mandated $200, an option not previously discussed.

Administrators are looking to increase tuition for out-of-state undergraduate students next year by $1,126.68.

That number, which interim Provost Bruce Carney referred to as a “working figure,” represents an almost 5.2 percent increase in out-of-state tuition, which would be used primarily to support faculty salaries and to give more financial aid.
