Movie Review: Think Like a Man Too

Think Like a Man Too

????½

Imagine the perfect trip with a bunch of your closest buddies. How would it look like? What would you do? "Think Like a Man Too" was supposed to be a nothing-but-perfect vacation, but turned out to tumble downhill after a series of unfortunate events.

The film shot in Sin City brings out the wild side of an all-star cast including Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union and Taraji P. Henson, just to name a few.

Michael and Candace, played by Terrence Jenkins and Hall, decide to get married in Las Vegas. The night before the I-do’s, the guys and girls all end up in jail together. Not to mention, the couple is constantly being interrupted by Michael’s mother Loretta, played by Jenifer Lewis, who is staying in the hotel room directly beside them. Candace and Loretta just can’t seem to get along, which creates a whole different problem in the couple’s relationship.

The first movie, "Think Like a Man," was based on the bestseller relationship book by Steve Harvey, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.” The movie promptly followed the chapters of the book and that was very evident throughout the film.

There was the momma’s boy, the player, the dreamer, the non-committer and the divorced guy. Their roles had great influence from the book. However, there was not a book to follow his first one. "Think Like a Man Too" failed to take the characters in new or interesting directions. That would have added more substance to the film instead of just comedy.

Because the movie was based so much on Michael and Candace’s wedding, other characters didn’t get much spotlight. Of course Hart was the highlight of the movie, given his talent of pure and original comedy. However, it might have been too much. His character, Cedric, has a loud and frantic personality that made audiences laugh, but given his funny character the limelight he’s given could have been shared with other characters, such as La La Anthony’s character Sonia.

Sonia showed up out of nowhere in the beginning of the film, and didn’t have a major role. The film could have done fine without her, but if she had a bigger role, that would have made her more relevant.

Overall, the cast made for an amusing story about love and the good and bad in relationships. The setting in Las Vegas was perfect for this cast. Although it was mainly a black cast, there were non-black actors such as Gary Owen who played Bennett, and Ferrara who played Jeremy. It was a movie that appealed to all audiences, not just the black audience.

Be prepared to see some familiar faces and actors that you may not have expected. The movie will surprise you with a couple of guest appearances.
