TOP STORY — Romney campaign hits a financial snag
While Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign spent about $67 million last month and had about $50 million cash on hand at the start of September, President Barack Obama’s campaign had nearly $90 million on hand going into September despite spending a higher amount — $83 million — in August.

The Washington Post reports: “The numbers signal a financial shift away from the Republicans after a summer of Democratic hand-wringing over fundraising. The Obama campaign argues it is likely to be outmatched by conservative super PACs and nonprofit groups, which can raise unlimited funds from wealthy individuals and corporations and are working to build a ground game to match them.”

World’s Obama fever cools
Politico reports: “As Obama prepares to stand for reelection, the surge in good feeling toward the U.S. that he ushered in has dimmed in much of the world. And evidence is scant that his popularity has advanced U.S. interests with America’s allies or its adversaries in a tangible way.”

Latest developments in protest of anti-Islam film
The Associated Press rounds-up the latest demonstrations worldwide in response to caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in an anti-Muslim film and a French satirical weekly.

“At least 33 people have been killed in violence linked to the protests over the film that has also renewed debate over freedom of expressions in the U.S. and in Europe.”

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson visited Duke University Thursday and focused on shifting attention to issues he said both Romney and Obama have been neglecting on the campaign trail, such as decriminalization of the war on drugs and deeper cuts in government spending. The News & Observer reports.
