Rain can't keep Sierra Club out of action

Known for always being crowded and full of student organizations advertising themselves, the Pit was lonely today. Rain in the morning deterred students from coming out.

The only student organization brave enough to face the bad weather was the Sierra Club. Members decided to come out today despite drizzle because they are determined to make UNC switch from coal energy to alternative energy.

“We really need to make this happen," said Laura Stevens, organizer of the club's Beyond Coal campaign.

Members of Sierra Club are collecting signatures to send a petition to Chancellor Holden Thorp to move UNC beyond coal. It takes more than a little rain to discourage this motivated group.

Laura Stevens, far right, collects signatures from students on the Pit to petition the University for a change to alternative energies.
