Bucket List Item Number 29: Drink an extra-large coffee at the Daily Grind

Although I’m already a senior, I’ve only visited the Daily Grind Espresso Cafe once—and never ordered an extra-large coffee there. I come from a family where stops at Starbucks are very much part of our daily routine but I never really caught on to coffee. If I do need to satisfy my caffeine fix, the closest thing I’ll go for is green tea with honey.

But on my way back from class yesterday I figured I’d try something different. Starbucks and Caribou Coffee on Franklin St. were a bit of a hike from my class at Greenlaw Hall, so I figured why not try the coffee at the Daily Grind across the Pit? As a senior, I figured it would be a good one to cross off my own bucket list.

At the Daily Grind, an extra-large cup of regular coffee—which costs $2.10 plus tax—is comparable in size to a venti cup at Starbucks. I tried the caffeinated house blend of walnut and cocoa; although their decaf blend—which contained hints of apple and roasted nuts—looked intriguing, I wanted a good boost of energy from my cup o’ Joe.

Although I wouldn’t consider myself a coffee connoisseur, the house blend had a pretty bold kick to it and a distinct but pleasing aftertaste. It’s worth a try since it’s fairly close by, and will also help keep you awake for all that midterm studying you’ll need to do later.

Of course, if you’re not in the mood for regular coffee, the Daily Grind also offers other beverages such as red eyes, espresso and tea. Snacks you can find there also include croissants, cinnamon buns and vegan breakfast cookies. For the full menu, click here.

For all you night owls out there, Daily Grind also recently expanded its evening hours during the week. Since Monday, the coffeehouse is now open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Monday through Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, and 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays.
