UNC trails 31-10 at halftime of the Independence Bowl

SHREVEPORT, La. — At halftime of the Advocare 100 Independence Bowl, North Carolina trails Missouri 31-10.

The Tar Heels struck first on the opening drive of the game when quarterback Bryn Renner connected with Dwight Jones for a 22-yard touchdown pass, but not much went well for UNC during the remainder of the first half.

The North Carolina defense struggled to stop Missouri and Tiger quarterback James Franklin, who picked up 70 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and completed 10 of 15 passes in the first half. Missouri had 192 rushing yards in the first half, while UNC picked up just 13.

With just less than nine minutes to go in the second quarter, UNC redshirt freshman tailback Giovani Bernard fumbled the ball and Missouri recovered. Four minutes later, Jones bobbled a pass from Renner before dropping the ball, which was then intercepted.

Missouri’s 31 first-half points is an Independence Bowl record for the most scored in one half.
