Luke Maye commits to UNC

The North Carolina basketball team picked up its first commitment of the 2015 recruiting class today when three-star power forward Luke Maye announced his decision on Twitter to come to Chapel Hill.

Maye had offers from a dozen different schools, including Clemson and Notre Dame.

Rivals, 247Sports and Scout all peg the 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward as a three-star recruit.

While coach Roy Williams has said that UNC's recruiting efforts have taken a hit in the wake of the school's academic scandal, Maye's family ties to North Carolina have clearly outweighed any of those concerns.

Maye's father, Mark, was a quarterback for the Tar Heels back in the 1980s.

According to Justin Parker, with the Lake Norman Citizen, Maye will walk on to the team as a freshman before gaining a scholarship for his other three years. He is planning on signing his National Letter of Intent Wednesday.

Here's how Maye stacks up with other recruits in the nation according to Rivals and 247Sports:

  • Rivals - 145th-ranked player in the nation
  • 247Sports - 136th-ranked player in the nation, 33rd-ranked power forward in the nation and 3rd-ranked played in N.C.*
