Cloud services: weather the storm

Cloud services such as Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive, Microsoft Skydrive and iCloud fetch our precious data back and forth from remote Internet servers. The concept itself is so handy and convenient that we barely think about numerous side effects of this ongoing “cloudophilic” trend. Is our data safe in the cloud? Where is it located? And who can access it?


PSA: iOS now available through iTunes, system settings

Apple released iOS 6, the newest version of it’s mobile operating system earlier today. If you have an iPhone 3GS or up, a 4th gen or later iPod touch or any iPad, you can update through system settings (General > Software Update) or by connecting your device to iTunes. New features in iOS include a new Maps application with turn-by-turn navigation (warning: the app only includes driving directions, those traveling by foot will have to look to other apps), enhanced Siri capabilities, Facebook integration, Passbook, fullscreen browsing and panorama photos (for iPhone 4S and up.


Apple introduces the iPhone 5

Facing serious competition from other smartphone makers, Apple finally unveiled the iPhone 5 this afternoon, featuring a bigger screen, an aluminum and glass back panel and LTE connectivity. Apple CEO Tim Cook debuted the newest iPhone in San Francisco, calling the phone “an absolute jewel.” Made entirely of glass and aluminum, the iPhone 5 ups the screen size from 3.5 inches to four.


Amid near-future announcements, Nokia debuts two new Lumia phones

Nokia kicked off a busy tech September by introducing the Lumia 920, a top-of-the-line Windows Phone 8 device this morning. Amid reports and confirmations that Apple, Motorola, Amazon and HTC will be debuting smartphones of their own this month, Nokia and Microsoft announced their Windows Phone 8 flagship in New York City.
