Board of Alderman approve conditional use permit

With the approval of a town permit, Weaver Street could soon gain a new member.

At a Tuesday night meeting, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a request for a Conditional Use Permit for the 403 W. Weaver St.property owned by Weaver Street Development, LLC.

Jack Haggerty, a Carrboro architect, submitted the permit request.

He said the owners are trying to keep as many options open as possible because they do not have a specific tenant in mind.

The permit request listed a variety of uses for the property — from a restaurant or law office to a church or seasonal decorations store.

The property is 1,190 square feet and the board approved an addition of 736 square feet. The permit allows for 22 parking spaces without the addition and 29 spaces with the addition.

The board also passed the six recommended conditions of the permit, which will allow the group to waive sidewalk width requirements and keep two parking spaces in front of the building along Weaver Street.

Notable:

At the meeting, Carrboro resident Stephen Dear read a letter to the board, asking members to repeal an anti-lingering ordinance that bans day laborers from standing at the intersection of Davie Road and Jones Ferry Road during certain times of the day.

The board voted against Dear’s appeal and will discuss the ordinance at a meeting on Nov. 22.

“I’m here to ask you tonight to repeal this. It’s been four years. Let’s put this behind us and build a real solution for our community,” Dear said.

“If it were up to me, I would vote tonight to repeal this law…The question is raised: why do we have it if we don’t enforce it?” Alderman Sammy Slade said.
