Profile: Social conservative Jim Snyder concerned about NAFTA

This is the final profile in a series on the 2014 U.S. Senate Candidates on View from the Hill.

James “Jim” Snyder, Jr., is a Republican who addresses many issues not emphasized by his GOP competition.

A lawyer from Lexington, N.C., Snyder filed for the candidacy only four days before the deadline, and said he would have filed earlier but was ill.

Snyder has experience in the political arena, having run seven times for office.

“If I don’t get a vote, if I don’t raise a dime, I will have a bully pulpit, so that’s why I’m running,” he told the (Raleigh) News & Observer last month.

In an interview with the Craven County Republican Party, Snyder, 68, said he hasn’t read the GOP platform, but he has written a political manifesto entitled “The Conservative Mind,” which compares and contrasts the liberal and conservative mindsets.

During the same interview, he said the purpose of state government is to protect free society and the purpose of the federal government is to defend borders and protect sovereignty. He said he would repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Snyder’s concerns include the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement, which he said in an interview with the (Raleigh) News & Observer “just about ruined our economy.”

As a social conservative, Snyder also said he is concerned about abortions. Greg Brannon, Snyder’s main opponent, said he would support legislation banning all abortions.

Snyder is polling at one percent as of May 5, according to Public Policy Polling. He and Kryn are tied for the bottom of the seven GOP candidates, and it isn’t likely either will win the nomination.
