Republicans nominate Rep. Tim Moore to replace Thom Tillis as speaker of the N.C. House

The N.C. House Republican Caucus met Saturday in Asheboro in a closed-door session to elect their leadership for the upcoming session that begins Jan. 13 — selecting Rep. Tim Moore of Kings Mountain as their nominee for speaker of the N.C. House of Representatives.

Five other representatives were running for the job, but Moore won on the first ballot.

“I'd like to congratulate Speaker Designee Moore and the rest of the House members who will assume important leadership roles this session. I look forward to working with both the House and Senate to find solutions that strengthen our state and build on the accomplishments we've made in the past two years," Gov. Pat McCrory said in a statement.

The full House will vote on their leadership when the session begins in January, but since the Republicans hold a majority, it is expected that Moore will be easily voted in — as long as the party unites behind him as a candidate.

Moore is an attorney who was first elected to the N.C. House in 2002, and he served as chairman of the powerful Committee on Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House during the 2013 session.

Moore was a member of the UNC Board of Governors from 1997-2001. He graduated from UNC-CH in 1992 with a degree in political science.

Moore will replace U.S. Senator-elect Thom Tillis, who has served as speaker since 2011.

“I congratulate Rep. Tim Moore on being selected by the House Republican caucus as its Speaker designee. Tim has been a valuable asset to the House leadership team and I am glad that the House of Representatives will be left in his capable hands. Tim’s proven leadership and dedication to all the citizens of North Carolina will be well-served in the coming two years and I wish him and all of my fellow legislators well as January’s legislative session approaches,” Tillis said in a statement.

The party chose to nominate Rep. Paul Stam, R-Wake, for speaker pro tempore of the chamber and Rep. John R. Bell, R-Wayne, as majority whip for the Republican Caucus, according to WRAL.
