A UNC alumnus and former senior editor of The New York Observer, Tom Acitelli is the author of “The Audacity of Hops,” which chronicles the history of America’s craft beer revolution. Staff writer Alex Dixon spoke with Acitelli about the beer industry in North Carolina, a trip to Belgium and his favorite places to drink in Chapel Hill.
The banjo has become a staple instrument in American music. On Aug. 25, the Southern Folklife Collection at Wilson Library will present lectures, music and an exhibition as part of the symposium, “The Banjo: Southern Roots, American Branches.”

From his performance beginnings as a music student at UNC to his widely popular show set in the fictional town of Mayberry, N.C., Andy Griffith influenced millions throughout his career and his lifetime. Griffith, the television star, musician and comedian, died at his home in Manteo, N.C., Tuesday. He was 86 years old.

Karina Soni thinks the combination of food and music is the perfect way to enjoy the summer outside. Soni is the station manager at the UNC student-run radio station WXYC, which put on its first Backyard Barbecue event of the summer outside of Chapel Hill Underground Sunday. Sunday’s event featured live music from two local bands, pulled pork barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and chips for a cover charge of $3. Around 150 people attended the event. Backyard Barbecue shows are scheduled to occur on the last Sunday of every month at the Chapel Hill Underground.
Comedian Sara Schaefer said that her show tonight at the Dirty South Comedy Theater might be the last time anyone can see her perform at a small venue.
Adrian Schlesinger curated and coordinated two art shows before she graduated from UNC in May. Her third show, held last week at Carrack Modern Art Gallery in Durham, benefited Church World Service — an organization that partners with religious groups to serve refugee and immigrant communities. The show, “Home is in You,” featured artwork from recent UNC graduates Laura Melosh and Katie Frohbose. Wilmington-based artist Wendy Kowalski provided paintings from her new collection for the show as well.

Four monks sit in a circle at the Unity Center for Peace recreating a complex piece of art, the Medicine Buddha mandala, using millions of grains of colored sand. The large piece of three-dimensional sand art takes five days for eight monks to complete and requires painstaking attention to detail and knowledge of the intricate Medicine Buddha mandala.
