TO THE EDITOR: Last week, the UNC Sport Clubs shared their good health with the patients of UNC Hospitals by donating platelets and plasma. Over the week, the UNC Hospital Platelet & Plasma Donor Program was able to collect more than 60 units for the patients of UNC Hospitals. Platelets are used for patients with leukemia, cancer, transplants, trauma or blood disorders. Plasma is primarily used for patients with severe burns and liver failure. I think these students deserve recognition for several reasons. First, out of all Americans, only 5 percent donate any type of blood component or whole blood. Second, our nation's supply, as well as our local supply of blood and blood components, are incredibly low and needs support from our community. Third, most of the students who participated found the time, while juggling a class schedule, part-time job, study time and their sport team. It shows that volunteering can be a part of your routine and they are setting the example. With this being the season of "thanks" and "giving", I would like to encourage others to follow their example by giving thanks for their good health and give the gift of life. You do not have to spend money for this gift, stand in long lines or fight for a parking space. Instead, you roll up your sleeves, lay down and relax while watching a movie during your donation time. Follow the example, give someone the greatest gift they could wish for - life! Susan Ramsey Donor Recruiter & Community Coordinator Platelet & Plasma Donor Program UNC Hospitals
