The North Carolina men's tennis team got the 200a1 season off to a successful start, sweeping past Davidson 7-0 on Thursday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

The Tar Heels started strong, winning all three doubles matches. The No. 1 seed of Nicholas Monroe and Marcio Petrone beat Whit Hansen and Billy Boykin 8-4.

Trystan Meniane and David Cheatwood beat Chad Winebarger and Robert Gould 8-4 at No. 2, while Greg Archer and Chad Riley rolled past Robert Haywood and David Webb 8-1.

In singles play, the Tar Heels were paced by No. 1 seed Petrone. Petrone earned a three set victory against Hansen 6-7, 6-2, 6-0.

Monroe made his collegiate singles debut, beating Chad Phillips 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 slot.

"I went into the match a little nervous at first, but then got into the flow for the rest of the match," said Monroe of his first collegiate victory.

Also winning were Cheatwood (No. 2), Meniane (No. 3), Riley (No. 5) and Archer (No. 6).

"It was a good match to get started with," UNC coach Sam Paul said. "We've still got some things to work on though. We will keep working every day."
