DTH Editor's Column Unnecessarily Tarnished Reid Chaney's Reputation

After reading Monday's op-ed on Reid Chaney and the Carolina Athletic Association, I was absolutely astonished.

You would think that as the chief editor of our school newspaper, Matt Dees would want to show some respect and consideration for his fellow students.

Obviously, this isn't the case.

Reid Chaney has just been elected and doesn't even start his term until next month.

I feel that his reputation is being ruined before he's even had the chance to show us what he's got. It's one thing for Dees to express his feelings about the recent election, but it's another to ridicule Reid Chaney the way that he did. I realize that Dees is protected under the First Amendment and can publish anything that he feels is suitable.

However, I felt that it was an awful opinion piece and showed no class whatsoever on his behalf. The rest of the student body didn't seem to have a problem with Reid or his "aw-shucks" personality, as he would never have been elected twice if they did.

Since Matt Dees seems to know exactly what it takes to win the title of CAA president, I keep wondering why we have yet to see his name on the ballot.
