Kluegel, Reddick to Train With U.S. Team

If women soccer players Catherine Reddick and Jena Kluegel make the U.S. team, they will miss five games.

From Staff Reports

North Carolina women's soccer players Jena Kluegel and Catherine Reddick left Tuesday to train with the U.S. national team and could be lost to the Tar Heels for up to 12 days.

Both UNC starters will be in a training camp with the national team until this coming Sunday. At that time the U.S. squad will be cut and will compete next week in Nike Cup games in Chicago, Kansas City and Columbus.

If Reddick and Kluegel do not make the team they will return for UNC's game against Clemson on Sept. 12. If the two players are chosen by national team coach April Heinrichs for the upcoming tournament they will miss the Tar Heels' next five games.

These personnel losses could not come at a worse time for the Tar Heels, who will play five games in 10 days from Sept. 7-16.

In other women's soccer news, North Carolina remains atop the NSCAA/Adidas Women's Division I poll following an opening weekend which saw it escape with a 1-0 victory at No. 17 Texas.

UCLA, Notre Dame and Nebraska also got off to undefeated starts and fill the next three positions, respectively. Portland rounds out the top five, by virtue of a 1-0 loss.

Martin Named Player of the Week

North Carolina senior midfielder Abby Martin has earned ACC Player of the Week honors in field hockey after notching four goals and three assists for the Tar Heels in two victories last weekend. Saturday, Martin scored two goals and added one assist to help North Carolina to a 3-1 victory against No. 9 Penn State. On Sunday, Martin had two goals and two assists in a 13-0 win versus Virginia Commonwealth.

Martin, who is from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., leads the team in goals for the season with five. She also is the team's points leader with 13.

Men's Soccer Reaches 4th in Poll

The North Carolina men's soccer team moved up a spot to No. 4 in the latest NSCAA/Adidas national poll, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday. The Tar Heels, who have opened the 2001 campaign with back-to-back wins, were ranked No. 5 last week.

UNC is the highest-ranked ACC team in the NSCAA/Adidas poll for the second week in a row. The Tar Heels also are ranked No. 1 in the South Region rankings, a key factor in NCAA Tournament seedings and selections.

The Tar Heels opened their 2001 season with a 8-1 victory against East Carolina last Friday and followed up that win with a 3-0 shutout of Appalachian on Monday evening.

Swimming Schedule Announced

UNC coach Frank Comfort's team will open the season at home against Georgia on Oct. 17. This year's home schedule includes dual meets against Georgia, Clemson, Virginia and N.C. State.
