Michael Hooker 5K Race On Sept. 15 Will Benefit Cancer Research Center

Sept. 15 is a big date, but not just because it is the day of the Tar Heels' first home football game. It is also a day where each of us, even as college students, can take part in an effort to win the war against cancer.

The Carolina Athletic Association and Carolina Cancer Focus are co-sponsoring the 3rd Annual Michael Hooker 5K Memorial Race to benefit the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our late chancellor, Michael Hooker, was certainly both a distinguished scholar and energetic leader for the University. But more than that, he was a friend to students -- a man who was known for crowd surfing at a basketball game and attending nearly every UNC women's soccer game.

His life and leadership here at Chapel Hill ended prematurely when he passed away of cancer in the summer of 1999. The legacy of his commitment to the University, his joy and enthusiasm, and his vision for this place can still be felt throughout the campus.

This race is a way for the University to celebrate and remember this man and his legacy. We would like to invite any and everyone from the University community to come out and have fun in the 5K Run/ Walk at 8 a.m. this Saturday beginning at Hooker field in front of Carmichael Gym.

You can register in the Pit for the rest of this week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or on the morning of the race, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is only $10 and includes a T-shirt.

Serious about running? Then get ready for some competition because prizes will be awarded, including two tickets to the UNC vs. Dook basketball game!

Please come out and support this worthy cause. For more information, please contact either of us at chaney@email.unc.edu or etsimon@email.unc.edu.
