Branam Out 3-6 Weeks

The top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer program received some bad news Wednesday with the announcement that starting goalkeeper Jenni Branam will be lost to the team for three to six weeks.

Branam suffered a fractured left patella in Tuesday night's 3-1 victory at Duke when she collided with Duke's Sarah Pickens in the second half on a play in the box.

Branam stayed in the game for a few minutes after sustaining the injury, was substituted for and then went back into the game. But eventually she had to leave the game for good with less than four minutes remaining.

UNC women's soccer trainer Bill Prentice confirmed Branam's injury Wednesday. Depending on X-rays, team physician Bill Garrett will make a determination as to whether surgery is warranted in the next 24 hours.

Depending on Branam's recovery time, she could be back as early as UNC's game at Virginia on Oct. 25 or as late as the first week of NCAA Tournament play on Nov. 16 and 18.

Senior Kristin DePlatchett will start in Branam's place. The senior has started 17 matches in her career and has a career goals against average of 0.47 with 17 shutouts. Branam has 42 career starts with a goals against average of 0.51 and 23 shutouts.

Field Hockey Reschedules Games

The North Carolina field hockey team has rescheduled two games postponed in September. The Tar Heels will host Old Dominion at 1 p.m. Oct. 17 and Virginia at 4 p.m. Oct. 25. Both games will be played at Henry Stadium.

The Old Dominion and Virginia games originally were scheduled for Sept. 15 and 16 and were postponed following the tragedies of Sept. 11.

The Tar Heels (8-2, 1-0 in the ACC), ranked No. 2 in this week's national coaches' poll, travel to Winston-Salem on Saturday for an ACC matchup with Wake Forest. Game time is 11 a.m.
