Police Arrest Texas Fugitive After Chase

David Wayne Richardson could be turned over to Texas police if the charges there are more severe.

Police arrested David Wayne Richardson, 36, of 2320 Morgan Road, Hillsborough at 7:53 p.m. He was charged with one felony count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, two misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, one misdemeanor count of driving while impaired and one misdemeanor count each of driving with a suspended license and speeding, reports state.

Richardson is being held in the Orange County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond, reports state.

Richardson is also wanted in Texas for one felony count of failure to appear in court and in Hillsborough for four felony counts of breaking and entering, reports state.

Chapel Hill Police spokesperson Jane Cousins said that depending on the severity of Richardson's charges in Texas, Chapel Hill police could hand him over to Texas police.

Reports state that an employee at the Hess Convenience store, located at 1213 Airport Road, observed Richardson pumping gas and noticed that he seemed intoxicated.

An officer followed Richardson as he traveled down Airport Road and noticed him aggressively changing lanes and weaving through traffic at an estimated speed of 55 miles per hour, reports state.

The officer attempted to stop Richardson, who led officers to believe he was going to stop. But Richardson continued to drive down Blossom Lane and on to Black Tie Lane, where he knocked over trash cans and plowed through residential yards, reports state.

Another officer joined the chase and soon afterward Richardson's vehicle collided with a rock at 105 Black Tie Lane at an estimated speed of 15 miles per hour, reports state. Richardson and his passenger, Jovola James, 43, of 2106 Stadium Drive in Durham, then proceeded to flee on foot with a 22 ounce bottle of Budweiser to nearby woods, reports state.

Reports also state that upon giving Richardson a breath-alcohol test, he had a blood alcohol level of .19 and .17.

After running a license plate check on Richardson's vehicle, officers discovered the car had been reported stolen from Toyota of Durham, reports state.

Reports also state that Richardson suffered minor injuries to his wrist and head and was not wearing a seat belt.

Police arrested James at 8:14 p.m. and charged her with one felony count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle. She was released on a written promise to appear in court. Both Richardson and James were scheduled to appear Tuesday in the Court of First Appearance in Hillsborough. Richardson is still in custody at the Orange County Jail.
