Police Nab Local Man For Drugs

Carrboro police officers were stopping a fight at a convenience store when the suspect fled the scene.

Randy Burnette, 31, of 112 Eugene St. was arrested and charged with one felony count of trafficking in cocaine.

Burnette also was charged with four misdemeanors -- one count of affray, one count of resisting, delaying and obstructing, one count of simple possession of marijuana and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, reports state.

Carrboro police responded to a call at 1:22 a.m. concerning a fight in the parking lot of The Pantry convenience store at 500 Jones Ferry Road, reports state. When officers arrived at the scene, three subjects engaged in a fight were separated, including Burnette, reports state.

Reports also state that officers discovered one of these individuals was bleeding from the back of his head.

The individual was later treated by EMS personnel, reports state.

No police reports were available Monday indicating that charges were filed against the other two participants.

Once officers began to investigate for possible drug possession, Burnette fled from police, reports state.

But officers caught Burnette after a short foot chase in a wooded area near the store, reports state.

Chapel Hill police arrived at the scene with a canine unit and found 29 grams of crack cocaine in the area where Burnette was arrested, reports state.

After a search, officers found four razor blades in Burnette's coat, reports state.

Reports also state that in Burnette's car, officers found about half an ounce of marijuana and a digital scale.

Burnette was transported and confined to Orange County Jail on a $5,000 secured bond, reports state.

He was scheduled to appear Monday in Orange County District Court in Hillsborough.
