Women's Basketball Runs by Western Carolina in Blowout

In fact, they needed to look no further than the woman running the point for the Tar Heels in the waning minutes of the second half.

It wasn't Nikki Teasley. She was on the bench for the night with 15 points and three assists. It wasn't Coretta Brown (15, four), and it wasn't Leah Metcalf (10, eight), both of whom were in the same spot as Teasley.

It was sophomore guard Courtney Chambers, who had never played the point for North Carolina before and entered the game with 13 assists for her career.

But anything went in North Carolina's 100-44 win against Western Carolina in front of 945 at Carmichael Auditorium. Six Tar Heels scored in double figures, while the team shot nearly 54 percent from the field (including 47 percent from behind the arc) and stole the ball 16 times, contributing to 29 Catamount turnovers.

"We're running a lot of different things on defense and on offense, trying to throw some teams off," Teasley said. "But on the defensive aspect, sometimes we throw ourselves off because we're doing a lot of stuff. So we're trying to work on it and be consistent. And a game like this is where we try to execute and get into habits."

The offense seems to have formed some good ones already. Although several open layups didn't find the bottom of the net, for the most part the Tar Heels' transition game looked polished, as they converted easy baskets off Western Carolina turnovers and defensive rebounds.

"I told them yesterday in practice our goal for the next week is to play team defense better," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "And then also, offensively, get our timing down because our timing hasn't been as good as it needs to be."
