The North Carolina men's tennis team wasn't looking for revenge.
But Wednesday, revenge is what it got.
After losing in 2001 to Furman for the first time in school history, UNC outdueled the Paladins 5-2 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
"They've got a good team," said UNC coach Sam Paul. "We were looking forward to playing them for that reason. We don't try to look at that stuff."
In the night's most intense match, top-seeded Marcio Petrone outlasted Furman's John Chesworth 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-4.
"I played well, but I should have played better," Petrone said. "I had a few opportunities to break early in the match, but he came up with some tough serves."
Fifth-seeded Trystan Meniane swept Furman's Patrick Gaughan 6-1, 6-1, and sixth-seeded Daniel Pinchbeck breezed by Ryan McCarthy 6-1, 6-0.
UNC's Nicholas Monroe and Geoff Boyd lost their singles matches, but teamed to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-2.
Petrone and junior Greg Archer won 8-2 in No. 2 doubles and Meniane and Pinchbeck won 9-8 (7-5) in the No. 3 slot to complete the doubles sweep.
