Women's Tennis Places 2nd

WINSTON-SALEM -- The 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Southeast Regional ended Monday, and members of the North Carolina women's tennis team took second place in the singles and doubles competitions.

Senior Kate Pinchbeck represented the Tar Heels in the final of the singles draw as the No. 1 seed. Pinchbeck and Senior Kendrick Bunn competed in the doubles final as the No. 7 seed.

Clemson's Julie Coin defeated Pinchbeck in the final of the singles draw 7-6(5), 6-2. Coin, a sophomore, was the No. 7 seed in the tournament.

The Kentucky doubles pair of Jill Buckley and Amy Trefethen from Kentucky defeated Pinchbeck, Bunn in the final of the doubles competition 8-3. Buckley and Trefethen were the No. 3 seed in the doubles draw.

The winners are qualified for the ITA National Championships.

Volleyball Falls in Rankings

North Carolina volleyball is ranked 13th in the latest USA Today/America Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Coaches Poll released Monday.

UNC was ranked in the Top 25 for nine-straight weeks, and held the highest-ever ranking for an ACC team at No. 11 for four-consecutive weeks.

UNC fell from No. 11 in the polls with a loss to unranked Florida State last weekend. The Tar Heels (21-2, 8-1) will have a chance to move back up in the rankings with a win against Georgia Tech on Friday at 7 p.m.

Kneipper Named ACC Player Of Week

Maryland's Scott Buete and North Carolina's Ryan Kneipper earned ACC Men's Soccer Co-Player of the Week honors after leading the Terrapins and Tar Heels this past week.

Kneipper, a senior forward recorded three goals and one assist as the Tar Heels defeated George Mason 2-0 and tied No. 2 Wake Forest 2-2. Against the Demon Deacons, the senior had a part in both Tar Heel goals, tallying one goal and one assist. North Carolina is currently 10-5-1, and 2-2-1 in the conference.
