TO THE EDITOR:
As a nation we are $9.7 trillion in debt. The World Health Organization ranks our health care system as 37th yet we spend more money on health care than any nation. Our economy is heading for a recession and our middle class is disappearing. What does this all mean? What are the implications of this for our future as the generation that will be forced to pay this bill?
Electioneering may force candidates to speak in simplified sound bites but as citizens we deserve more knowledge than simplified concepts of lowering taxes and the cost of 100 years in Iraq.
For this reason I ask that more attention be paid to the complexities of the issues involved in the US economy and would like to draw attention to the Economy Forum which will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Wilson Library's Pleasants Room. Speakers will be Dr. Neal Caren assistant professor in sociology Dr. Arthur Benavie emeritus faculty in economics and Dr. Pam Silberman president of the N.C. Institute of Medicine.
