Young Democrats must run for the right reasons

TO THE EDITOR:

While I was thrilled to see in Monday's DTH that more people will be running for Congress as a result of efforts by the Young Democrats (Young Dems aim for power"" Dec. 1), I wanted to write and make sure that candidates are doing so for the right reasons.

The article mentioned that one reason YD is soliciting new candidates is that it might mean rejection of events sponsored by conservative groups."" I would caution prospective candidates that Title V" Article I Section 109 of the Student Code and rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court do not permit evaluation of funding requests from registered student groups based on viewpoint or ideology.

As Speaker Pro Tem Bryan Weynand mentioned in the article many groups from all ideological persuasions have been funded this year and in years past. We can only evaluate requests based on how well they serve students. I voted for events this year that I don't personally support and I have voted down requests that I do support. I'm not there to vote for my interests; I am there to see that requests that have the greatest impact on the student body are funded.
