When No. 21 North Carolina opens the football season this Saturday against The Citadel, they will do it without wide receiver Dwight Jones. Jones will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday at UNC hospitals, and will not be available, according to the UNC Athletic Department. It will be determined after the surgery how much time Jones will miss.
Jones was listed as a starter at wide receiver heading into the first game of the season and was expected to receive the bulk of playing time at the start of the season. UNC lost its top three wide receivers from the 2008 team, including first-round draft pick Hakeem Nicks.
Freshman Joshua Adams is currently listed behind Jones on the depth chart, and Adams impressed coaches and teammates with his work during the spring game and in training camp.
Head Coach Butch Davis mentioned multiple times heading into Saturday's game that he will try up to five receivers in the game, hoping that one or more would stand out.
