Female assaulted on Pritchard Avenue

Victim was walking home, police say

A college-aged woman was assaulted on Pritchard Avenue as she was walking home Friday morning at about 2:40 a.m., according to Chapel Hill police.

The female was grabbed from behind and forced to the ground, police Capt. Leo Vereen said. The suspect fled as the victim fought back, and she sustained minor bruises and scrapes, Vereen said.

"Be cautious when you're walking home at night," Vereen said.

Vereen said recently a woman walking on Mitchell Lane was assaulted from behind and a man tried to take her cell phone. He said he doesn't know whether the incidents are connected, and that nobody tried to take the victim's wallet in this case.

Police are not releasing the name of the woman until they determine the intentions of the aggressor, described as a tall, slim man in his early 20's.

The Chapel Hill Police Department has asked anyone who has any information about the crime to contact Investigator Dawn Hunter at (919) 968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515.

Calls to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and the caller may be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000 for information that leads to arrest.
