Chapel Hill police make an arrest in sexual assault case

Nearly five months after a woman reported being sexually assaulted, Chapel Hill police officers have made an arrest.

Police arrested 27-year-old David Reza Anderson Shahriari of Chapel Hill in the Sept. 21-22 rape, assault and kidnapping case.

The Chapel Hill woman, who was not a UNC student, was walking on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard away from Franklin Street after 11 p.m. when a stranger grabbed her from behind near the Municipal Drive intersection, police said.

The person then dragged her to a car and raped her, Chapel Hill police Lt. Kevin Gunter said in September. After he raped her, he kidnapped her, drove her to the Chatham County line at U.S. 15-501 and left her there.

She found a bus around daylight, taking it to an area closer to her home, Gunter said. She then called police. She said was not injured or drugged and did not report that a weapon was used in the assault, Gunter said.

Shahriari was arrested at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Willow Brook Apartments in Chapel Hill, where he lives, according to police reports.

Shahriari, whose employer is listed as Carolina Fitness on police reports, was taken to Orange County Jail in lieu of $125,000 secured bond, reports state.

He had not been released as of Wednesday evening.
