Slavery, women’s rights, economics and animal rights all have one thing in common — food.

Each of these issues was brought up at Thursday night’s panel and discussion hosted by Fair, Local, Organic Food and the UNC Ethics Bowl. The event focused on students and food on campus.

The event was a sister event to Tuesday’s panel and discussion of the policy and ethics of food in the community.

Senior Adam Sherwood of Fair, Local, Organic Food helped organize the event.

“We want to address student-related issues, concerns and questions on food and ethics,” he said. “I am happy that we sparked interest, debate, speech and dialogue.”

The event included six panelists from student organizations representing Alianza, Ethics Bowl, Economics Club, Philosophy Club, Young Democrats and Fair, Local, Organic Food. The discussion was centered on issues regarding food choices for students that participants thoughts should be given special attention, as well as the responsibility of the University in providing food options to students.

Students discussed educating themselves about what they eat and being vocal about changes they want to see on campus.

Lee Storrow, co-president of the Young Democrats and a panel member, advocated for student activism.

“We have an obligation to say we expect our students to have healthy foods,” Lee said.

Panelists also discussed where foods on campus come from.

Rachael Mossey, co-chairwoman of Alianza and panel member, discussed issues faced by migrant workers and how that can influence food choices.

“We’re really concerned about food, but we are also concerned about the humans behind the food,” Mossey said.

After attending Tuesday’s discussion, freshman Sara Wright decided to attend the Thursday event.

“I figured I could potentially contribute to the conversation today,” Wright said. “Its an important and vital ethical issue that needs to be addressed.”
