The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Since when has Carolina been THAT school? You know, the one that cheats regulations, skirts requirements, pressures professors for passing grades and covers up poor conduct by athletes or their coaches?

Carolina has always been the benchmark for public Universities in this nation. We’ve had the best- value education, incredible school spirit, students who have been awarded national fellowships and accolades, professors on the cutting edge of their field and an honor system unrivaled by most other Universities.

When did UNC coaches, administrators and athletes forget that this is a university for learning, not some trumped-up vessel for athletic achievement at all costs?

What is slowly coming to light about the football team is disgraceful and it is ridiculous. These events will smear the centuries-old reputation of Carolina.

I know Carolina, I was born bleeding the right color blue, and I worked my butt off to be privileged enough to attend this great University. Because I know Carolina, I also know that this is not how most of the professors, students, administrators and coaches want the Carolina legacy to be remembered.

It’s time for the powers that be to take a closer look at all the athletic programs, not just football, sponsored by our University and to clear out the few bad apples before the rest of our reputation is spoiled.
