Career fairs bring potential employers

Students looking for jobs will be greeted by dozens of potential employers as part of the University’s career fair agenda this week.

The Diversity Career Fair will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Great Hall, and the Fall Career Expo will occur on Thursday in the Rams Head Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Both events have more employers signed up to attend than last year, with 56 coming to Wednesday’s fair and 94 attending on Thursday, up from 31 and 81, respectively.

Tim Stiles, associate director of University Career Services, said the office worked hard to bring more employers to the event.

He said some sectors of the economy are bouncing back and that the hiring of recently-graduated college students will follow suit.

In the past, the Fall Career Expo has been held in the Dean E. Smith Center. This year, it will be in the Rams Head Recreation Center for increased ease.

“The Center is convenient for employers who can park below, and it is more centrally located and easier for students,” said Director of University Career Services Ray Angle.

Stiles said that in past years participation has been disappointingly low. He hopes the move will get more students to show up to the event.

“Our fairs are too often dismissed,” he said, adding that a diverse group of companies will be there and all students will find one to fit their interests.

The Fall Career Expo is designed to appeal to a broad base of students, while the Diversity Career Fair is designed to attract employers who want to emphasize diversity in their work force.

Stiles said it taps into a niche of students who are committed and active in pushing diversity in society.

Some campus groups are asking their members to attend Wednesday’s event.

Black Student Movement members are being encouraged to take advantage of the fair after the group’s meeting on Wednesday, said Camile Jones, the group’s president.

“It is important for BSM members to attend, mainly for their own benefit,” she said, adding that the fair would help members transition from college into the workforce.

For a list of companies attending, students should go to the University Career Services website, log in to Careerolina and click on the events tab.
