Chapel Hill Town Council discusses museum's future, Carolina North at meeting

The Chapel Hill Town Council discussed future uses of the building that formerly housed the Chapel Hill Museum at its Monday night meeting.

Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Director Butch Kisiah presented the council with potential plans for the property, located at 523 E. Franklin St.

“What we need is a way to get the information out to the public that the space is open again to get them coming back in the door,” Kisiah said.

Recommended plans include holding public meetings to generate ideas for the space’s use and pursuing programming opportunities for the building, for which council members authorized Town Manager Roger Stancil to begin immediately.

The council approved $75,000 worth of funds toward the building’s short-term maintenance costs in the meantime.

Stancil also presented a report on Carolina North to the council.

The report covered both the University’s annual report on the mixed-use satellite campus and its stalled development as well as information discussed at the Sept. 29 public information meeting.

Based on the annual report, Stancil said the University was in compliance with the development agreement it made with the town in 2009.

Carolina North Executive Director Jack Evans reminded the council of the effect the economy had on the Innovation Center.

“The Innovation Center has been adversely affected by the economy,” he said. “There are currently no negotiations underway for that project.”

Council members also heard from UNC’s Director of Facilities Planning Anna Wu, who presented the University’s semi-annual report at the meeting.

The report detailed the University’s construction projects, including the recently completed Venable and Murray Halls, which will be dedicated today as part of University Day.
