The rules and judiciary committee met Tuesday night to discuss a bill that, if passed, would revise voting districts.

Student Congress Speaker Deanna Santoro proposed the bill earlier this year and appeared at the meeting to present it to the committee members.

The major issues of the bill center on representation of freshmen and redistricting to promote equal competition among districts.

Andrew Phillips, chairman of the Board of Elections, appeared at the committee meeting to present the board’s census data.

The committee discussed different venues of redistricting and made several changes, such as adding one seat to off-campus representation.

Members also discussed adding a district. The bill calls for a district that reserves a seat for an incoming freshman representative to be elected during a general fall election at the beginning of his first year. The election would not be included in the various special elections Student Congress must hold to fill vacant seats.

The committee voted unanimously to move the bill to full Student Congress next Tuesday.
