UNC School of Law students Destyni Williams and Colin Shive advised locally based international nonprofit Carolina for Kibera.
The organization, founded in 2001 by then-UNC undergraduate Rye Barcott, aims at empowering young people in the neighborhood of Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya.
Carolina for Kibera is run locally by Kenyans with the advice of Kenyan and U.S.-based volunteers. Its programs work to reduce violence, improve basic sanitation and improve education in Kibera.
Shive and Williams assisted Carolina for Kibera’s executive director and sole U.S.-based staff member, Leann Bankoski, by reviewing the organization’s legal structures and procedures.
The students worked through the Community Development Law Clinic, which allows third-year law students to provide advice to nonprofit clients about their business structure.
Carolina for Kibera will honor its 10th anniversary in April 2011. So far, it has developed youth-oriented programs in other communities in Kenya and six other countries.
