Carrboro is set to introduce a program to provide residents with free prescription drug discount cards at no cost to the individual beginning April 4.

The National League of Cities is sponsoring the program that will be administered by CVS Caremark. The cards offer average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

The cards are usable at about 14 pharmacies within five miles of Carrboro, as well as more than 60,000 participating retail pharmacies across the country.

The program has no restrictions based on age, income level or existing health coverage.
