CLEMSON, S.C. — After playing a close first half against the No. 7 team in the nation, North Carolina couldn’t keep up with a 35-point third quarter by Clemson and lost 59-38 on the road.

The Tar Heels (5-3, 1-3 ACC) were down by just a score, 24-17, at halftime. But Clemson’s big third quarter in front of a home crowd proved too much for the Tar Heels. UNC’s six turnovers didn’t help the cause either.

UNC gave up 367 passing yards and six total touchdowns to Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd. North Carolina QB Bryn Renner went 19-for-33 for 264 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions and a fumble. The fumble and one interception were returned for touchdowns.

UNC wide receiver Jheranie Boyd had two touchdown grabs in the first half and freshman T.J. Thorpe ran back a kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The Tar Heels return home next week for Homecoming weekend to play Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m.
