Concerns about a potential wave of homegrown violent extremism did not materialize over the last year, according to a study released Wednesday by the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security.
UNC sociology professor Charles Kurzman authored the study, titled “Muslim-American Terrorism in the Decade Since 9/11.” It found that fewer Muslim-Americans were arrested for violent crimes in 2011 than in either 2010 or 2009. Arrests in 2011 numbered 20, while there were 26 in 2010 and 49 in 2009.
