Amendment One supporters cheer after the results are announced at a Vote for Marriage viewing party in Raleigh on May 8.

North Carolina voted in favor of Amendment One — a constitutional amendment that establishes marriage between a man and a woman as the only union recognized by the state — by a nearly 60-40 margin Tuesday.

In Orange County, 79 percent of voters voted against the amendment. Orange county recorded a nearly 44 percent voter turnout rate in the primary.

Early poll results show Pat McCrory winning the Republican nomination for governor and Walter Dalton beating out Bob Etheridge for the Democratic nomination.
