The campus LGBTQ center needs a more central location

The UNC LGBTQ Center works to make the University a safe, affirming environment for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. But the current location of the center on South Campus — far from the center of campus — impedes that mission.

A central location would improve access to the center and reflect a commitment from the University to providing a safe, empowering environment.

The center’s location in the registrar’s office means the doors are only open before 5 p.m., greatly reducing its accessibility.

The center provides counseling and group discussions for students struggling with questions about their sexuality and gender expression.

These services provide vital support for students who might be dealing with emotional difficulty, isolation from friends and family, and harassment. But distance makes it less likely for the students who need the center’s resources to use them.

Physical space on North Campus is limited, and moving the LGBTQ Center there would likely require another office or organization to be displaced. However, giving the center an easy-to-access location has a great enough positive impact on those who use it to warrant the move.
