Solid Sunday leads Tar Heels to fifth-place finish at ACC Championship

The North Carolina men’s golf team traveled to New London, N.C., for the ACC Championships this past weekend.

After a shaky 5-over first round, the Tar Heels played the last 36 holes 15-under, good enough for a 10-under 854 and a fifth-place finish in the tournament at Old North State Club.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets ended up winning the tournament, scoring a 54-hole, 19-under total of 845. They beat out in Clemson in a two-hole playoff on Sunday.

Coach Andrew Sapp said Friday was definitely a tough way to start, but the ACC has five of the top 25 golf teams in the country right now. With such tough competition, Sapp was pleased his team came back and scored the team-low on Sunday.

“Obviously, we played really well on the weekend. If you give the leaders that kind of a lead on a golf course likes this, it’s hard to play catch up. I’m glad the guys continued to play hard, played a solid round yesterday and a fantastic round today.”

All five players shot under par on Sunday, but the consistency the Tar Heels needed to surge to a fifth-place finish came from sophomore Henry Do.

Do shot a 4-under 68 on Sunday. His final round landed him a fifth place finish individually.

On the back nine, Do holed out a shot from a fairway bunker to record an eagle. He said that he’s been playing some good golf as of late and that it all came together this weekend.

“I put some pretty solid rounds together,” Do said. “It’s really just been focusing on making putts. My putter hasn’t been the greatest that I needed to be, but coming off of that, it was good to see the ball go in the hole.”

Freshman William Register matched Do’s last round 68 and finished tied for 14th overall in the tournament. He shot a 2-under 214 total, bouncing back from a 4-over first round. He said that the team was disappointed overall but that they’re definitely in a positive mindset heading into the NCAA Regionals.

“We can definitely draw on the last few days,” Register said. “It kind of tells us we can’t really have a bad day if we’re trying to win Regionals and make our way to (NCAAs).”

The Tar Heels host the NCAA Regionals in Chapel Hill starting Thursday, May 14.
