The Daily Tar Heel

One Chapel Hill resident and two dogs have sustained chemical burns after a paint remover chemical was used on the floor and stairwell of Pinegate Apartments, located in Pinegate Circle.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department responded to a report of a strong chemical odor at about 7:36 a.m. Wednesday, according to a press release from the Town of Chapel Hill.

There were 128 units in the complex affected by the incident, according to the release. A contractor had used the chemical on the floor and stairwell of 11 buildings in the complex without any caution issued to residents.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department has requested help from the Department of Public Safety's Hazardous Materials Regional Response Team to deal with the incident. There are seven RRTs in North Carolina, and their purpose is to mitigate situations involving hazardous materials when these situations exceed local resources or expertise.

Updated information will be shared as it becomes available.
